Some Reasons for Wisdom Tooth Extractions
Wisdom teeth start appearing between the ages of 17 and 25. Unfortunately, the arrival of these teeth often brings problems. The dentist may suggest removing your wisdom teeth to help with any pain, swelling or infection you may be currently experiencing, or to avoid any future problems. There are other reasons why you may want to have your wisdom teeth extracted. Some typical reasons are:
- Your jaw may not be big enough for your wisdom teeth.
- The wisdom teeth are coming through the gums partway or in an awkward angle.
- The impacted wisdom teeth are damaging the jawbone or other teeth.
At Inspiring Smiles, our dentist will determine the position of your wisdom teeth and identify the type of extraction needed.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure
Before your wisdom teeth extractions, the doctor will perform a thorough oral examination, including a routine X-ray, to determine the position and size of the teeth. Our dentist has been highly trained in anesthesia, and we offer multiple anesthetic options to our patients. You can choose whichever anesthetic you are comfortable having. We also provide you with instructions for your pre- and post-operative care. Be sure to provide your full medical history and a list of all medications you take to the doctor. At a scheduled appointment, you will return to the office for your procedure. The dentist will administer your anesthesia and ensure you are comfortable before beginning the extraction. First, the dentist will start by exposing the tooth/teeth in the gums and remove any bone that may be blocking the removal path. Then, the dentist will carefully extract the tooth/teeth. In some cases, the doctor might break the tooth/teeth into smaller pieces to make the process easier. Once your procedure is complete, you will be sent home to rest and recuperate. In some cases, the dentist might prescribe prescription drugs to alleviate pain and avoid any infection.
